OPT Job Checklist (Use This Before You Accept)
Use this checklist before you apply, before you accept an offer, and again after you start (to prevent duties drift). The goal is simple: keep your work clearly related to your field of study and easy to describe.
Step 1: Study alignment
- • Can you name 3 courses or projects that relate to the work?
- • Do the keywords in the job description match your program?
- • Could you explain the connection in one calm paragraph?
Step 2: Weekly outputs
- • Can you list 3–5 concrete outputs (reports, dashboards, plans, logs)?
- • Are deliverables reviewed by a supervisor?
- • Are outcomes measurable (metrics, summaries, artifacts)?
Step 3: Supervision
- • Do you have a manager who reviews your work?
- • Is the job description consistent with what you’ll do?
- • Is there a regular check-in cadence?
Step 4: Drift risk
- • Could it become general admin or front-desk work?
- • Could it become mostly sales/outreach without analytics?
- • Could it become “posting content” without strategy/reporting?
